Once upon a time or 110 years ago, the first Iranian newspaper for women, Danesh (knowledge) was published in Tehran by Khanom Doctor Kahhal. Some accounts identify its proprietor as the wife of Dr. Hossein Kahhal, editor of the newspaper Istiqlal-e Iran. Others identify her as Ma'sumeh Kahhal and maintain she was not related to the mentioned editor, but in fact the first female optician in Iran.
Although the details about the founder of Danesh remain obscure, her journal reveals that as early as 1910's, she adopted a surprising marketing strategy. She exhorted men to read her newspaper to their illiterate mothers, wives and sisters so they could benefit from its essential information about oral hygiene, eye care and domestic improvements.
